Helping Your Child at Home with Phonics
Read Write Inc in Reception
Read Write Inc, or RWI is a systematic synthetic phonics programme which teaches children Early Reading skills in a brilliant way. Children at Mauldeth Road begin their RWI journey in Nursery and follow the scheme to year 2 (and beyond). This page will show you the order in which your child will learn sounds and word reading during their time in Reception. We hope that you find the links and videos helpful so that you can support your child at home to reinforce the important skills that they are beginning to master.

Starting RWI
We start RWI set 1 sounds at the very beginning of Reception. The children will have a phonics lesson every day where they will practice reading, writing and using the sounds. Once they have mastered a good number of sounds they will start to bring home phonics reading homework, so that they can practice their reading skills at home with you. It is really important that the reading at home is done regularly, every day for a few minutes, as this will help your child to make the best progress possible with their early reading.
We will keep you updated on class dojo and with handwriting sheets in their reading bag with which sounds they are learning. Each child will receive their own set of flashcards and a list of you can't trick me words for your child to become familiar with in the first half term. If you need a replacement set of cards, please ask your child's teacher. This video will help you to make sure that you are saying each of the sounds correctly when modelling them for your child.
